IMPORTANT BRIEFING & CONDITIONS
FOR CHINA/TIBET TOUR BOOKING
• Irrespective of the process charged by the Chinese/Tibetan Tourism authorities the tour to Tibet are neither luxurious nor gourmets' delights.
• Quality of hotels, guest houses and lodges in Tibet are improving but even then travelers must be prepared for minimum facilities at points like Zhangmu (Khasa), Xegar, Gyantse, Shigatse on the Nepal-Lhasa route. The position at Lhasa is far superior and continuously improving.
• Vehicles and road conditions in Tibet are generally satisfactory. However since the tour passes through high altitudes these tours are definitely not meant for ailing or very old road between Nepal border and Zhangmu on the Tibet side experiences landslides and travelers may be required to walk few kilometers with porters to carry the baggage, please note.
• Similarly the details on weather conditions, altitude sickness and suggestions for items to be carried by travelers provided elsewhere in this manual must be brought to the attention of travelers.
• We recommend that for all those itineraries that begin from Kathmandu, travelers should plan to reach Kathmandu at least 3 nights (more if it is before a Saturday and Sunday) before the scheduled departure for Tibet in order to obtain visa for China as also for acclimatization for the tour.
• Professionalism in tourism in Tibet and China is still far below the western travellrs expectations. Some times travelers having booked to stay on twins are given triple rooms and similarly ones having booked a single room ends up sharing a room. It is natural that such travelers will complain and ask for differences to be paid back to them. Although we shall definitely take up such cases with the Tibet/China authorities, it is to be clearly understood that until and unless we get a refund from them on these accounts the claims could not be entertained by us.
• It is absolutely essential that all payments in full in US$ MUST reach our bankers, Nepal SBI Bank Ltd., New Road, Kathmandu A/C No. 17825240002336 favouring Kundalini Travel Nepal Pvt. Ltd. by Bank transfer only at least 30 days in advance before the clients arrival as without this we unable to repatriate the same in time to China/Tibet and obtain confirmation of arrangements from them. All bookings made are thus provisional only till paid for in full.
• We, Kundalini Travel Nepal Pvt. Ltd. always act as agent on behalf of the Tibet/China Tourism Authorities and what happens within Tibet/China is clearly beyond our jurisdiction and control and as such disclaim any liability whatsoever on such accounts. Moreover, there is no insurance coverage in the tour prices within China/Tibet and we thus urge in client's own interest that they insure themselves at their own cost at home before departure for the tour for all risk for which coverage is desired.
• At the time of booking – Passport Number, Full name as in the Passport, Date of birth, Nationality, Occupation, Sex, Home and Office address with Telephone No of the client must be submitted.
• We at Kundalini Travel Nepal Pvt. Ltd. assume that foreign agent is aware of these facts as listed 1 to 9 above and have briefed his clients, the travelers, similarly. All bookings for Tibet/China Tours are accepted subject to these conditions.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Because of Tibet's high altitude (Lhasa is 3680 meters) travelers with pre-existing problem of heart, lungs or anaemia should consult a doctor before thinking of a visit.
Acclimatisation is the adjustment of the human body to the diminished supply of Oxygen at such altitude. Mountain sickness (also called altitude sickness) is caused by an insufficient flow of Oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. It can affect anybody 3,000 m. ( 10,000 ft.)
The symptoms include headache, nausea and shortness of breath, singly or together. About half the people coming to Lhasa suffer from at least one symptom in the first two days and quickly recover. Over-exertion seems to contribute to the mountain sickness and dehydration may be a predisposing factor. Sensible precautions should include:
• Stick to a schedule of mild activity for the first two days and never over exert.
• Drink plenty of fluids even if you have to force it down. Up to 5 litres a day is recommended to maintain clear, copious urine. It is an advisable not to drink alcohol as it dehydrates the human body.
• Don't smoke or keep it to a minimum.
• Avoid sedatives like sleeping tablets or tranquillisers as these tend to depress respiration and limit Oxygen intake.
• Diamox (acedtazolamide) a mild diuretic, which stimulates Oxygen intake, is used by Doctors of the Himalayan Rescue Association in Kathmandu for climbers making sudden ascents.
This is a prescription drug and as such MUST BE TAKEN AFTER CONSULTING A DOCTOR on the flight from Chengdu (127 meters) or from Kathmandu (1500 meters) just before landing at Lhasa's airport.
It is not usual to wake up at night at high altitude gasping for breath. Don't Panic! This complain is normally quite harmless, caused by change in the control of breathing within the brain while you sleep. Normal breathing can quickly be re-established by relaxation, rhythmic deep breathing and the understanding that there is nothing to worry about.
In 99% cases of headache and nausea, overnight rest and two aspirins will relieve the symptoms. However if it persists of if dry cough with frothy sputum develops, or if there are signs of severe lethargy or poor coordination, get to hospital at once. Better yet, take the next plane out of Lhasa to lower altitude. A lower altitude is the Surest cure.
